5K

Today was the day of the 5k in honor of Marie's mom. 

 We had 5 kids from our class show up to support Marie and her mom in her fight against brain cancer.

We love you Marie! 

Wax Museum!

Our 5th grade Wax Museum was INCREDIBLE this year! So many awesome costumes and posters!

Electronic Field Trip

Today my students got to participate in Colonial Williamsburg's e-field trip through a special skype interview. 

These 6 students volunteered to take on some extra homework and learn all about Utah's Constitution and even memorized the preamble.

And he's a video showing one of their practices. This wasn't the real thing, just a practice.

Constitution Day

On Friday our class got to celebrate Constitution Day. It was a fun day where we got to learn all about the Constitution. We read and analyzed the Preamble, we did a challenging cross word puzzle answering questions about the Constitution, and we did an art project. 

The highlight of the day included a visit from my friend Megan whose husband is currently serving overseas with the National Guard. Megan explained that the soldiers get really cold at night and don't have warm blankets to wrap up in. 

Our class got to help her tie a quilt that will be sent to Iraq to help keep our troops warm! It was a perfect service project for Constitution Day - serving those who are fighting for our freedoms and protecting our Constitution.

CLEAR CREEK!!!

(I finally have all the photo permission slips in and I'm so excited to start posting pictures from class events. First on that list is Clear Creek!!)


For my readers who don't know, our school district owns a summer camp and during the school year we get to go up and use it!! Each year we take all of our 5th graders up on an overnight fieldtrip; we stay in cabins and even have lunch ladies that prepare all our food. 

Here are some fun pictures from the trip:

We learned different colonial games.

We learned how to knit, while making hats to donate to the hospital.

Then we made bridges using popsicle sticks and glue.

It was fun to have some of our moms and dads come up to help!

The Skits-in-a-Bag were LOTS and LOTS of fun!

The next morning we had our bridge breaking activity.

After clean up, a hike, and some outside fun, it was time to get back on the busses.

I LOVE THESE GIRLS!

When the boys came up we had a special surprise... A BEAR!!

The boys were pretty creative with their cards.

The boys' skits were hilarious!

 

The next morning the boys broke their bridges.

 These two were best buds. :)

The field trip was over before we knew it. 

These boys are SO much fun!!

Clear Creek was a huge success! 

Meet our new friend: Cupcake!

Hello parents and students! I thought you might like to see pictures of our new class pet, Cupcake!

 She is very cute and lots of fun to have in the classroom. She's kind of shy and doesn't really like to come out of her cage much, but I think she likes being a part of our class! 

Right now, I'm not sure how we're going to work out weekends. I know lots of students really want her to visit their homes on the weekends, but her cage is very large and a little hard to transport. We'll have to work out special arrangements.

Ready for 6th Grade?

Hi!! Can you believe it's been 2 months since school let out? I wanted to check in with you to see if you're having a fun summer and to let you all know that I really miss you.


Please make sure you are keeping up on your reading! 30 minutes EVERY SINGLE DAY!! You all made such good progress in 5th grade, I really don't want your reading levels to go down. Also, brush up on your times tables. Make sure you know your 9's and 12's really well, so you'll be ready for 6th grade.

Williamsburg

I am having so much fun on my trip! I wanted to show you a couple pictures.

Jamestown!!

Remember when we read the book Blood on the River?

Remember when we watched the movie Nightmare at Jamestown?

Remember how much we loved learning about Jamestown, 1607, Pocahontas, John Smith, and everything else?

I GOT TO GO THERE TODAY!!

It was an incredible experience. One of the coolest things of the day was meeting Dr. Kelso, the lead archeologist of the excavating project where they are still uncovering artifacts each day.

Here's a picture of all the teachers from my trip. Dr. Kelso is in the middle wearing the hat and shorts. 

Most people don't get the experience to personally meet Dr. Kelso, so meeting him was a special occasion. I shook his hand and got to have my own picture taken with him. I sort of felt like I met a movie star today!

Cupcakes!

Before the school year ended, we had a fun birthday party to celebrate all of the summer birthdays in our class. As you can see, my cute kiddos loved their cupcakes!!

US NAVY

Logan is in love with the Navy. He's talked about it all year and really has one big goal in life - to join the Navy. Today his grandpa, who is a purple heart recipient, came to talk to our class. It was an interesting presentation and we were so glad he could come visit!

Thank you to Logan, his grandpa, and veterans everywhere! 

Challenge Winner

At the beginning of the school year we sent home a paper announcing a special new challenge. It was called The Great American Challenge. All completed forms needed to be turned in by the beginning of May. Out of our whole 5th grade, only 2 students completed the necessary requirements.

Cute Kaley-Bug was one of them.

Congrats Kaley! I'm so proud of all your hard work!

I have lots of reasons to be grateful for my wonderful 5th grade class, but most recently I am grateful for the opportunity I had to go to Capital Theatre and see the incredible production of LES MISERABLES!!

For those of you who don't know - At Christmas time my students (and their parents) pooled their money together to get me one big, awesome Christmas present. And you guessed it... it was 2 tickets to see Les Mis! 

The show was amazing! 

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful Christmas gift!

Summer Birthday Party!

School Carnival!

It was fun seeing so many of you at the school carnival tonight! The 5th grade teachers were in charge of the photo booth and it was super fun!

I haven't heard the final word yet, but I'm sure our school raised a couple thousand dollars. Woohoo!

We've Been Busy

I honestly can't believe how quickly the school year has passed by. 

Here are some of the things we've been busy doing:

For our Mother's Day gifts, we made these beautiful plates.

I was so impressed with how creative they turned out! Good work everyone!

(Note to moms - Did you like yours?)

We have been doing lots of fun science experiments! In this experiment, we got to dissect baby diapers.

We also made circuits and played with bar magnets.

In this little activity, we used Ivory soap to demonstrate how popcorn pops. (We found out that popcorn popping is a physical change.)

This "rock" is actually not a rock! It is an actual piece of the Berlin Wall!! Blake's dad lived there when the wall came down. How cool! It was fun to see and touch a piece of real history!

This is Weston holding a piece of cotton. To understand a little bit of what life as a slave was like, we all  got to clean a piece of real cotton. (We found out that it is really hard work and even makes your fingers sore!)

Today was "Tool Day" for the 5th graders. Tool Day is a career type day where parents come and show us the tools they use in their jobs/hobbies. It was fabulous! Thanks to all our wonderful presenters for coming and sharing your tools with us!

David was glad his dad was able to come talk to us about the tools related to the carpet cleaning business.

These lucky kids got free shirts from the dad who helps educate students about the harmful effects that drugs have on our bodies.

Guess what - Only 9 more days of school!!
