Challenge Winner
At the beginning of the school year we sent home a paper announcing a special new challenge. It was called The Great American Challenge. All completed forms needed to be turned in by the beginning of May. Out of our whole 5th grade, only 2 students completed the necessary requirements.
Cute Kaley-Bug was one of them.
Congrats Kaley! I'm so proud of all your hard work!

Reading with Technology
Our class is doing some {AMAZNG} things with technology!!
We are lucky because we are an eMINTS class. A couple of years ago the 5th grade teachers at our school were awarded a $48,000 technology grant that gave each class 16 student laptops, a mounted projector, a Promethean board, an Elmo and other various things.
Because of this fabulous grant, our class gets to do some things that most classes don't have the ability to do. Here's a peek at some of the ways we're integrating technology into our reading.
These guys (Dylan above, Kimball below) are using the Garageband software to record themselves reading books from the 'Who Was.." series. When finished, we'll burn the "audio books" to a disk and other classes in the school can read and listen along.
This group is working on an iMovie using the built in camera in their MacBook. They recently completed the book Walk Two Moons and are making their own talk show based on the book.
This sweet kid is doing a version of the Power Reading program. He does a 'cold read' with me, then listens to the story on CD, practices by himself. and then he does a 'hot read' with me. His reading is improving everyday!
These cutie girls are reading and listening to the book Anne of Green Gables using the free program called Lit2Go. Lit2Go (available through University of South Floria using iTunesU) offers free audio downloads of hundreds of classic literature books.
I love this little headphone splitter. I bought the splitter and 5 sets of gummy earphones for around $20. It's a great way to make your own listening center!
Keep up the great reading everyone!!

Fun Science!
Last Friday I was able to attend a training put on by the Discover Gateway Museum. Part of attending the session meant I got to bring home over $100 dollars worth of fun science materials.
Today we got to do one of the cool experiments.
How to: Poor Poly A into a cup with Poly B. Stir furiously.
We found this to be a chemical reaction because:
- Heat was released
- It changed from a liquid to a solid
- Air pockets formed (meaning a gas was released)
- A surprise color changed occurred
- It cannot be reversed
- It formed a completely new substance
Students, leave a comment and tell me which science experiment has been your favorite so far this year.

Clear Creek
The weather was perfect! The sun was shining, it was not too cold, and the scenery was beautiful!
These are the cabins we stayed in. Look how high the snow is!
Once we got to Clear Creek, he had some cabin time, ate lunch, then got started on our workshops. We had 6 different workshop rotations where we learned about teamwork, bridge building, photography, colonial games, quilting, and survival skills.
Later that night we ate dinner, did skit-in-a-bags, then watched a movie while we ate smachos! (Smachos are s'mores in nacho form - delicious!!)
The teacher's skit was hilarious!
This is our smacho assembly line.
Yummy!!
In the morning, we had breakfast, had our bridge competition, cleaned up, played outside in the snow, ate lunch, then came home.
Some bridges were super strong!
It was a fabulous trip and we were able to create lots of fun memories! Thanks to everyone who participated and helped (especially our parent volunteers) make this such a successful trip!
*Please note, more pictures will be added when student permission slips are returned!*

Jazz Reading Contest
Our school had soooooooo much fun participating in the state-wide Jazz Reading Contest in February! We ended up as one of the top schools in Utah and we WON a Jazz player! Gordan Hayward came and read us some stories and answered some questions.

Congratulations to Bailee who was the top reader for our class! She also won a Jazz jersey for being the top reader in 5th grade! Yay Bailee!
Valentine's Day Party
Look at these awesome pictures from our class Valentine's Day party.
One of our favorite games was the whip cream/bubble gum game. You hide a piece of bubble gum under a pile of whip cream. Using only your face, you have to find the gum. The first person to blow a bubble is the winner! Because the whip cream is cold and creamy, it makes the gum hard to chew... so blowing a bubble is hard to do.
